On Wednesday, May 11th we headed 15 miles up the Rappahannock River to our next "home for the night", a beautiful little town called Urbanna.
There are many bridges along the rivers feeding the Chesapeake Bay, like this one across the Rappahannock River. And as the picture shows, it was a perfect cruising day on the Bay with smooth waters.
With such calm waters, I found myself at the helm more. This freed up Dave to trim his herb gardens, which make for many wonderful meals by the Captain!!
Typical sights on the Chesapeake included HUGE barges
& old lighthouses.
As we were approaching Solomons Island, this military plane was practicing take-off & landing.
And after a long 80 mile cruise up the Bay, past the mouth of the Potomac River, we proceeded up the Patuxent River to Solomons Island.
Home for the next two nights, Zahniser's Marina. Here we met up with several other Loopers, who quickly gave us the low-down on the good places to eat & the fun things to do. I love it when that happens, it's like having a personal tour guide.
The Maritime & Lighthouse Museums were our first stop.
There we toured an amazing original lighthouse,
a collection of old fishing/crabbing boats, which Dave found quite interesting,
& the typical museum displays explaining the history of the watermen in that area.
After two fun days, it was off to Edgewater, MD for an extended stay at Beave & Heather's home on the South River. To our surprise, much of the shoreline along this middle section of the Chesapeake Bay was rock.
We were lucky to be able to dock the boat at the neighborhood dock, which is where Beave & Heather keep their boat, Bottom's Up, & is only a short walk to their house. It wasn't long before the guys went fishing, bringing home dinner that night!
During our stay, we were thrilled that my Mom & Dad came to visit.
It was so great to see everyone & we had so much fun playing with Max & Leah!
We anchored in a perfect little bay and took the dingy to shore & found yet another quaint old town with great restaurants, unique shops & historic homes.
It was so peaceful, we stayed three nights. With a beautiful sunrise awakening us on Saturday morning, we lifted the anchor & headed for Solomons Island, MD.There are many bridges along the rivers feeding the Chesapeake Bay, like this one across the Rappahannock River. While we were there the Blue Angels were performing as part of the Naval Academy graduation week. With hundreds of other boats on the Severn River, we had perfect seats on the flybridge of Bottom's Up to view the amazing show.
Many thanks to Beave & Heather for a great week plus!
